Former State Minister for Information and Technology, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, has alleged that he is being subjected to harsh treatment at Kashimpur High-Security Prison. During a court appearance on Monday (December 2), Palak stated he has been confined to a small, five-foot by four-foot cell for the past two weeks without receiving "division facilities" entitled to certain detainees.

Palak's Claims in Court

Standing before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Imran Ahmed, Palak said, "I have been placed in a cell alongside dangerous convicts, including murderers and extremists. I have not been allowed to contact my family for two weeks." He also requested the court's intervention regarding his conditions.

The court advised Palak to submit a written appeal, which his lawyer subsequently filed.

Legal Developments

Palak’s attorney, Farzana Akhtar Rakhi, revealed that he was transferred from Dhaka Central Jail to Kashimpur Prison on November 28. Following the court's directive, an application for division facilities was approved, and the necessary documentation will be delivered to the prison authorities.

Background of the Case

Palak was arrested on August 14 in Dhaka's Nikunja area while reportedly in hiding. He is a suspect in a murder case involving Riazul Talukder in the Shahbagh area. Since his detention, concerns have been raised about his treatment and access to rights commonly granted to detainees of his status.

This case sheds light on prison conditions and raises questions about the treatment of political figures under detention.
